What’s In My Camera Bag?
Happy Wednesday, Momtogs! I plan on diving into some technical posts soon and I’m assuming everyone will want to know what kind of equipment I’m shooting with. So, here we go!
I’m a Canon girl! Always have been and probably always will be
I shoot with the Canon 5D and love it. I’ll probably be upgrading to the Canon 5D Mark II very soon, but just haven’t gotten around to it yet. For weddings I shoot with two camera bodies so it will be nice to not have to use my 30D anymore.
I’d say about 90% of the pictures you see with Brayden (and any other portrait shoots I do) are taken with the Canon 50mm 1.2 lens. I LOVE that lens. It’s expensive, but totally worth it!
For weddings I shoot primarily with the 50 1.2, the 24 – 70 2.8, and the 70-200 2.8. For weddings you really have to have the 70-200 2.8 although I only use it for the ceremony and a little bit of the reception. I also have the 28 1.8, the 85 1.8, and the 15mm fisheye. The 28 1.8 and 85 1.8 are great lenses that are relatively inexpensive.
I’m pretty partial to prime lenses. Prime lenses are the lenses that can’t zoom. I’m not going to lie. It took a lot of getting use to. You really have to learn to zoom with your feet rather than the lens. But, I’ve found that prime lenses are much more crisp.
While you can still get great pictures with cameras like the Canon Rebel, it obviously helps to have a really good camera body and great glass. But, I started out shooting with the Rebel and shot with it for a long time. It’s a great little camera. Your equipment is important, but an understanding of light, a good eye, and how to work your camera is more important in my opinion.

I prefer (in order):
A good light.
A good lens.
A good camera.
My eye is the same in all my pics. The big differents between a good pic and a normal or bad pic is the light.
And Im a minolta user since the film cameras. And now i became a sony user… I use my sony A700 with a tamron 17-50 2.8 (marvellous lens) and a minolta 80-200 2.8. And the minolta 11-18 is very good for my minolta 5D (6Mpx) but a little soft with the A700 (12Mpx).
But my prefer item is…. the umbrella of my flash….The light is all.
Kisses Drew and write more…for daddys too.
So, if you are shooting with a canon rebel (like i am) What lens would you recommend is the best for taking pictures of kids? I have a kit lens. But I want to get a new lense. Just not sure which one is better for what I am using it for?
Thanks Drew for sharing. I’m a Nikon girl and am really enjoying it. I’ve often thought of making the switch to Canon but I decided to stick with my Nikon gear since it’s so expensive to make the switch and they’re so close in competition. Anyway, I’ve started shooting with my 50mm 1.8 and can’t believe what a difference it makes compared the the 24-120mm 3.5 and other lenses I had been using. I’ve often thought about getting the 50mm 1.4. Do you think there is a big difference between the 1.8 and 1.4??
Thanks!
Thanks for Sharing Drew!!!!
I love seeing what you shoot with! xo
Ashley Rose’s last blog post..Welcome
You just helped me be that much more confident in my choice of lenses for the next one I purchase! You’re awesome. Love this post.

Thanks for sharing Drew! So funny that you posted this because just yesterday I sent a friend a long email about lenses and such! Glad to know that I do in fact know what I am talking about!!
My question is, how often do you find yourself using your 24 mm and 85 mm. I have a 50 mm {want to upgrade though!!} and am now in the market to add to my bag! I was thinking I wanted a 35 mm and an 85 mm. Any thoughts? I pretty much have decided not to get a zoom of any sorts and stick with prime lenses because of the exact thing you mention…sharpness! {I have a Sigma zoom but am selling it!} Since I have no desire to ever shoot a wedding, I think I am good with primes!
Thanks so much for sharing with us!! This blog is so great!!
great site…love the idea of putting this together…
so you think the 1.2 is worth all those pennies! It is next on my list for sure…I love my 1.4…did you find a big difference between the 1.4 and 1.2?
Hope all is well! I still need to get together with you sometime!
xoxo

Hi Drew, thank you for this blog! I’m a mom and a newbie at photography and have found that everyone in this industry is so amazingly generous with their knowledge and willingness to help others. I hope to one day have enough experience under my “camera strap” if you will, to set up a day with Drew B. You rock! Keep up the amazing work.
Hi Drew! Lovin this blog! And of course your pics! Thanks so much for the info of what’s in your camera bag! Just got my first slr, the 40D, lovin learning and playing!
Hi, I’m a new mom and new photographer. I don’t really know the first thing about cameras but love photography. A friend suggested I get a canon rebel as a first “good” camera. what is your opinion, and lens number? etc. I don’t know all that stuff. all I know is , the camera I have now has a shutter speed too slow to catch great photos.. Help! Thanks!
