Hi, I'm a new mom and new photographer. I don't really know the first thing about cameras but love photography. A friend suggested I get a canon rebel as a first "good" camera. what is your opinion, and lens number? etc. I don't know all that stuff. all I know is , the camera I have now has a shutter speed too slow to catch great photos.. Help! Thanks!

Hi Drew, thank you for this blog! I'm a mom and a newbie at photography and have found that everyone in this industry is so amazingly generous with their knowledge and willingness to help others. I hope to one day have enough experience under my "camera strap" if you will, to set up a day with Drew B. You rock! Keep up the amazing work.

Thanks for sharing Drew! So funny that you posted this because just yesterday I sent a friend a long email about lenses and such! Glad to know that I do in fact know what I am talking about!!

My question is, how often do you find yourself using your 24 mm and 85 mm. I have a 50 mm {want to upgrade though!!} and am now in the market to add to my bag! I was thinking I wanted a 35 mm and an 85 mm. Any thoughts? I pretty much have decided not to get a zoom of any sorts and stick with prime lenses because of the exact thing you mention...sharpness! {I have a Sigma zoom but am selling it!} Since I have no desire to ever shoot a wedding, I think I am good with primes!

Thanks so much for sharing with us!! This blog is so great!!

Thanks Drew for sharing. I'm a Nikon girl and am really enjoying it. I've often thought of making the switch to Canon but I decided to stick with my Nikon gear since it's so expensive to make the switch and they're so close in competition. Anyway, I've started shooting with my 50mm 1.8 and can't believe what a difference it makes compared the the 24-120mm 3.5 and other lenses I had been using. I've often thought about getting the 50mm 1.4. Do you think there is a big difference between the 1.8 and 1.4??
Thanks!

So, if you are shooting with a canon rebel (like i am) What lens would you recommend is the best for taking pictures of kids? I have a kit lens. But I want to get a new lense. Just not sure which one is better for what I am using it for?

I prefer (in order):

A good light.
A good lens.
A good camera.

My eye is the same in all my pics. The big differents between a good pic and a normal or bad pic is the light.

And Im a minolta user since the film cameras. And now i became a sony user... I use my sony A700 with a tamron 17-50 2.8 (marvellous lens) and a minolta 80-200 2.8. And the minolta 11-18 is very good for my minolta 5D (6Mpx) but a little soft with the A700 (12Mpx).

But my prefer item is.... the umbrella of my flash....The light is all.

Kisses Drew and write more...for daddys too.
