Who Wipes?

Before I had a kid I was adamant that he or she was not going to watch TV.  No child of mine was going to spend their day watching TV when they could be playing outside or reading books or learning about the world.  But, then I had a kid.  And I got kind of lazy.  I could really use a half an hour of laying in bed while Brayden watched Mickey Mouse Club House or Little Einsteins (which by the way is my favorite and I’m pissed that lame Agent Oso replaced!).  And then there are those days where I just need to get 1 or 2 more things done and I turn on the TV for him.  Just for a few minutes.  Well, Brayden has found a new obsession.  Madagascar.  He’s obsessed.  It’s like crack for babies.  He stands there like this for the whole 86 (glorious) minutes swaying back and forth slightly, laughing at all of the appropriate parts.

How does he know what’s funny?  And speaking of funny, he’s not the only one who thinks it’s funny.  When we were in Hawaii Brayden was watching it in his grandparents room and I could hear them cracking up through the wall.  My  mom was over this weekend and she was cracking up too.  I guess it’s better than my obsession when I was a kid.  I apparently watched Snow White and the Seven Giants (yes, Seven Giants, not Dwarfs) over and over again.  At least kids movies are funny for adults to watch too.  Although I’m getting a little sick of my husband reciting lines to Madagascar.  I think we’ll have to move onto Madagascar 2 now.

So, what are your favorite movies to watch with your kids?

And, by the way, there are a couple more new pictures of Brayden’s modeling session over on my DrewB blog!

So this made me giggle…I was “that” mom too. And I’ll just say that my kids watch more TV than they should! But they LOVE Special Agent Oso. LOVE it!!

They are both big into Madagascar. Our first one is scratched and not working but the second one is a hit! And “The Letter Factory” by Leap Frog. Education obsession they have with that one!!

Hope you get some good ideas!

LOL!!!! I had to think for a minute – did I write this blog because what do I do in the mornings? Pluck Pierce from his crib and pop him onto my bed to watch … MICKEY MOUSE CLUBHOUSE … while I sleep a bit longer! I am also disenchanted by Special Agent Oso (he is annoying) and have to settle for a Curious George (not my favorite) / change the channel / Mickey Mouse Clubhouse combo. I’m going to try out Madagascar though! Our favorite is Jack’s Big Music Show on Noggin.

Thank you again Drew for all of your help – I am STILL using the worksheets to learn more!!!

Drew, My son loves the Brain Candy DVD’s. I mean LOVES. With a passion reserved for none other. I too was a ‘no tv mom’…..that lasted a good three months! I figure a Mom needs a break too every now and then!

I always said I wasn’t going to be “that” mom too. I try to keep the tv turned off as much as possible, but sometimes you just got to turn it on to get things done. Since Ella loves doggies, her favorite is Beverly Hills Chihuahua. She does just like Brayden; in a total trance!

Finding Nemo is the hot flick in our home. We have watched it over a hundred times!!!! It’s a good thing it’s one of my favorites otherwise I would go bonkers!

My hubby HATES the TV for children, so I have a little guilt when I would do it. But when Sam was little, OMG, she was the WORST when she woke up from naps. I couldn’t stand the whining. So I threw her on the couch and turned on Elmo. Sometimes though, we would watch a movie and it was Peter Pan or 101 Dalmations – which… depending on the movie… she would get through about 40 min until a ‘boring’ part and then wander back over to me. I was sad then. :)

The past year or so she really plays by herself really well so we don’t watch to much TV. Unless BOTH children are up early from naps and it’s 4pm and it’s another TWO HOURS until the hubby comes home and I turn on Dora cause, OH GAWD, I love how they sit and watch it.

Lately, Griff has been driving me batty after naps so I turn on the TV for an hour so he stops whining at me! So funny.

my son is absolutely OBSESSED with CARS!!! he has watched it so much it no longer plays, which is fine by me! When we were at the store yesterday, to get dippers, he saw a cars shirt, and tried to put it on in the store! I bought ti for him and very morning when he wakes up he points to his pjs and says “no cars!!!” then goes to his room and tries to find the cars shirt! But I agree it is nice to have them distracted for a short amount of time so I can at least pretend to get things accomplished! :) you should check out madagascar 2 to mix things up a little! :)

My girls really love Madagascar too! Since we went to the zoo on Sunday now their favorite is The Wild. It is cute I will have to admit. I probably let my kids watch more TV than I should but sometimes you just need a break.

LOL – I cracked up the second I read your title. Then in my head I said “Oy Vey!” Madagascar is the little Beast’s all time favorite movie – in fact his first movie love. And part 2 was the very first movie he ever saw in the theater. It is not as good as the first one – a bit too violent and adult in places I think. But the first one, whew, it cracks ME up! I actually don’t mind watching it over and over. I almost always find something new to laugh at. BTW, love the baby gate in front of the entertainment center. I am SO stealing that idea. Neither of my kids will leave it alone!

As I write this, my 5 year-old little boy is dressed as a Stormtrooper watching one of the “Star Wars” movies. “Cars” was his favorite for a long time, but he’s too big for that now. Ha! I would never get any work done in the mornings without the TV. After reading the other comments, I don’t feel so guilty about it now.

My daughter loves Toy Story and Toy Story 2. My husband and I are so over these movies but as long as our daughter loves them so be it! What ever makes these kiddos happy!

  17. Jen Imus says:

Okay… Sydney and Kendall LOVE Madagascar. And if Brayden loves the first one, he will definitely love the second one. Kendall can spend hours reciting the head Lemur (Julien). I need to get it on video one of these days.

I am also very upset that Little Einstein’s is gone… If I have to hear “It’s all part of the plan… more or less” one more time I think I might have to pull my hair out! However, as far as movies that I like my kids to watch… for Audrey my 4 1/2 year old, I love putting on musicals for her or anything that we can dance to (I especially like putting on the musicals I watched when I was a kid… I’m very nostalgic like that), for Kate my 2 year old, I liked her watching Little Einsteins, but since that’s now out, she watches whatever she wants… lately it’s Little Mermaid (all three), she can now recite the lines and sing the songs, so it’s actually very cute to watch!!!!

Isn’t it funny how we plan to be “that kind of Mom” and then reality slaps us in the face. The Baby Einstein movies and Yo Gabba Gabba on Noggin allow me to get my housework done if Kayden is being a bit fussy. After reading this post and the comments, I think I will feel a little less guilty next time. :)

OMG! This is hilarious! It is so true! I started out with the whole “no TV” mindframe too, but things change quickly. ;-)
I love that your husband does that too! Mine is currently quoting Kung Fu Panda quite frequently.
My favorite movie to watch with the kids is, and may always be, Shrek! It’s a good one!:-)

  21. sandie says:

this is so funny and true!! and Madagascar 2 is just as funny. Zach watches it everyday – sometimes more than once. wall-E is holding the #2 spot in our house currently. oh and your new site is WONDERFUL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
