Piers Scare Me
Last week Chuck had Lasik Surgery so Brayden and I had to find a way to occupy ourselves in Newport for a couple of hours while we waited for him. I decided to take him down to Balboa Island to ride the ferry. On a side note, every time I say “boat” to Brayden he does this funny little chuckle. He’s an odd boy. Back to my story, so he loved the ferry and the water, but the Fun Zone was closed so we walked all the way over to the pier. The only other time Brayden has been on a pier he was pretty young. I pretty much had a panic attack when we got out there. What happens if the pier collapses? He can’t swim. What if there’s an earthquake? A tsunami? What if his stroller falls off the side? Needless to say, we had to leave. Well, I for some reason forgot about my fear of piers until we got all the way out to Rubys (probably because I really wanted a chocolate shake). While inside the whole restaurant started to shake. I tried to stay calm and I looked to all the other people to see if they were calm and they were. So, I calmly asked for a lid for our shake and we went on our way. B didn’t seem to have a problem with the pier. Or maybe he was just too interested in his shake.

Oh no! Why was it shaking? Just a little movement from the pier? I would’ve been scared!!

There were some pretty big waves that day. I think that’s what was causing it!
I’ve been inside the Ruby’s on the Oceanside pier when it started to shake and I got really nervous so you’re not alone

i am not that nervous of a person as you are- but i come close. where was it recently that i got freaked out when the ground shook?….oh it was this like 30 story doctors office and i could feel the ground moving in the office- what made it worse as we were on the elevator to the 19th floor or something like that we were talking about elevators and i said to my hubby and those chatting us up in the elevator “even as scarey as it is to be this high up in the air, at least we know if we die today in an earthquake we are close enough to the top to be rescued first”. so i think that way of thinking got me freaked out enough that i was harassing my hubbys doctor to “get a move on” so i could get myself out of there. i dont “do” buildings with shakey floors.

What did you rope off the pier to get this shot? Where are all of the people? Love it, love Ruby’s shakes. Wanted to name Janey Ruby but Jason laughed in my face when I brought it up. Whatevs. Did he survive the Lasik?

Beautiful boy, beautiful day!
That is totally me, too! I never worried about random things like that until I had children. Now every movie that has a catastrophe, every news article with mayhem and death, and every odd story you ever heard goes racing through my mind, and not only do I freak out inside, but I have been known to cry in scary movies when I think about what I would do if my children and I were in that situation!
Needless to say, my husband thinks I’m crazy–I think it’s a mom thing.
I have this ongoing urge to jump off of high places… including piers… it’s really weird and I totally understand what you’re saying.
