Tips For Your Family Session – #2

This is what most of you struggle with for your family session – what the heck are you supposed to wear?!?  Here are some tips that will help you decide!

1)  Be unique, but be you!  I am begging (I’m on my knees pleading with you!) you to NOT wear jeans and white shirts OR black with khaki.  That is so 1998, people.  Let’s get a little creative here.  I tell my clients that they should all compliment each other, but not be too matchy, matchy.  I tell them to avoid big logos on t-shirts, but to not be afraid of colors or patterns.

A few months ago I had clients who pulled this off perfectly.  Their colors were black, white, and they all had a hint of electric blue.  I absolutely loved it!

2)  If in doubt, email your photographer.  Ask them if they have any suggestions for what to wear.  I promise your photographer will love you for this!  I’ve even gone shopping for some of my past clients!

Kim, the mom from the family above, emailed me options for their outfits.  I was able to choose the outfits for each of them that complimented each other and even suggested that Kim go buy shoes that were the same color blue.

3)  If you’re having a hard time, start with the kids outfits first and then find your outfits.  I find that sometimes the kids outfits are the hardest and once you get those picked out you can easily pick out the parents outfits.

My favorite places to get inspiration for outfits:

J. Crew

Crewcuts – OMG!  Cutest outfits ever for little ones!

Anthropologie

GAP and GAP Kids

Tea

Oilily

Etsy – For cute tutus, hats, and baby clothes!

Old Navy is also a very affordable option, and they often times have colors accross babies, kids and adults that match!

ha ha, i know what you mean about the outfits…i have had to encourage (a more personal client) to use one of the outfits i bought to use, because it was likely that she didnt understand the instructions on what to wear to fit with what i was invisioning for the shoot!

Seriously… matchy matchy=not cool. My father-in-law insisted we do this for my husband’s family picture this past summer. I kid you not, it was the THIRD!!!! time everyone wore white collared shirts. I wanted to die.

Sadly, my husband and I didn’t realize we both wore white and khaki until after our shoot. Of course our son didn’t (not much better, he wore blue), but it really came out looking NOT matchy matchy and very classy. We just ended up wearing something that looked good (and wouldn’t be too trendy) on us. We are both dark skin and dark hard, so white was a no brainer. I just had NO idea we looked so identical. :) Our photog was fabulous and made us look even better.
