So. You Live In A Cave…

You live in a cave.

And you have zero natural light in your house.

Does your cave have a garage?

Go in your garage.

Open the garage door.

Bribe your model to sit close to the edge of the garage.

Do crazy things to get them to smile.

The end.

Seriously, it may not be the prettiest spot in the house, but you’ll get great light.  I would suggest moving the cleaning supplies and paper towels before you start.

If you really make an effort the garage is an amazing place to shoot.  Maybe even set up a fake studio.  This doesn’t solve the problem of not being able to use natural light for everyday snapshots, but as I’ve said over and over your everyday snapshots don’t have to be perfect.  Because they’re just snapshots.  So flash away on those shots.  I would suggest using the garage when you want to get more portraity shots of your kids.  Try it!  Let me know how this works for you cave dwellers out there :)

PS Thank you to my friend, Julie, for sending Brayden this awesome B shirt!  We love it!

We just moved and have lots of trees around the house so I am assuming we will not have good lighting now inside, but I have an amazing yard and will have to get busy setting my “studio” up in the garage! It really isn’t fair that I am a photographer and live in a cave. It is too dark 85% of the time in my house. I am ready to chop down the shade trees and buy bigger windows! To top it off, it is cold outside 65% of the year. *sigh*

I have heard to do this, but am yet to try it. Luckily I don’t live in a cave anymore so won’t have to use this method too much… I would really have to bribe my kids to get them to sit there, they would be wanting to ride bikes and play if we were out there :)

i am pretty sure that if the kids went in the garage they would get attacked by boxes and black widows. so there’s that. maybe I should clean it…

I live in a cave AND I hate taking pictures of my kids indoors. Probably a fear of bad light…. I have used this idea quite a bit with my kids. And even on shoots, having the sunlight bounce off of the concrete is a great way to get those awesome catch-lights in the eyes! (The girls are counting down the days until they get to see Miss Drew!)… :-)
