Mother’s Day Giveaways – Day Three

It’s here!  It’s here!  It’s here!

The UNmanual is DONE!

I started working on this guide last August and it’s turned out more amazing than I could have ever expected!  I’m so excited for you to get your hands on it because I know it’s going to help all of you take control of your camera and take full advantage of that fancy DSLR you’ve been shooting on Auto!

The UNmanual is a guide that explains why your camera does what it does in English.  When I got my first DSLR camera, I sat with my camera in one hand and my manual in the other.  I quickly realized that the manual was written in a foreign language that I could not understand.  I then enrolled in a community college photography course.  After most classes, I walked out more confused than when I had started.  One day I sat down with both my camera manual and my textbooks determined to understand how my camera really works.  And I realized everyone was complicating the subject much more than I needed it to be.  There’s no need for mathematical formulas or crazy charts.  Once you break down the information you need to know and forget the information you don’t need, shooting in manual really isn’t that complicated!

The UNmanual is for beginner photographers who want to take control of their cameras.  In the guide you will learn about your camera, what settings I shoot on and why, how to shoot on manual and properly expose an image.  You will also learn about lighting and how to get great lighting.  It is filled with pictures and examples!  The information in the UNmanual is exactly what is covered in my mentoring sessions and in the Mom*tog Pro sessions, which I no longer offer.  I am a Canon shooter, so the information in the guide is geared towards those with Canon cameras.  I did my best to include the comparable settings for Nikon shooters.

The guide will go on sale tomorrow!  It will be priced at $95, which will include an instantly downloadable copy AND a hard copy that will be mailed to you.  But, you can be the first to win one today!  Here’s how:

1)  You need to be a mom!  These giveaways are in honor of Mother’s Day so please only enter if you are a mom.  I’m not going to ask for proof.  I’m just going to trust that you are being honest :)

2)  Leave a comment saying why you need the UNmanual.

3)  Want extra chances to win?  Here’s how:

*  Follow @drew_b on Twitter and tweet: “The UNmanual from @drew_b is here!  Win one today!  Enter at http://momtog.com”

*  Blog about the giveaway (with a link back to Mom*tog) and leave a separate comment here with your blog address.

*  ”Like” Mom*tog on Facebook and leave a comment here saying that you’ve done so.

Contest ends at 9PM Pacific time on 5/5!  All comments after 9PM will be deleted.

Thanks!  I hope everyone is having fun with this week full of giveaways!

PS  A HUGE thank you to Jamie, from So Divine Designs, for spending countless hours on making the design perfect!  She is amazing!

I’ve been trying really hard to get better with my camera and I’ve been frustrated by the lack of accessible resources. This sounds wonderful! Thanks!

I would LOVE to win the Mom tog UNmanual !!! It looks AWESOME !! The reason I would love to win it is : I am trying so hard to grow in the world of photography. I just started my journey a year ago (May 09) when I bought my very first DLSR (it’s a nikon d50). I still have a L O N G way to go. So I’m constantly trying to learn more more more ! I am a mother, I have a 6yr old daughter, and now I am pregnant with our second child who is due in 3 weeks from now. It’s suppose to be another girl :) Although this is only our second child, it is my fifth pregnancy. I’ve lost all my other babies via miscarriage and tubal (aka ectopic) pregnancies. The Doctor told me I only have a 50% chance of conceiving and carrying to term another baby in my life (that was before I got pregnant with this baby who’s due in 3 weeks). So she is truly a miracle. My first daughter is a miracle as well, especially since I had a miscarriage and a tubal pregnancy BEFORE her. It seemed impossible and I never thought I’d have a chance to be a mom. BUT … here I am, the PROUD mother of a 6yr old, beautiful and intelligent little girl, and waiting for the arrival of girl #2 :) I want to capture EVERYTHING that I can … I don’t want to lose the special moments as my children grow. That’s why I chose to learn and advance in photography. Life is a very special gift and a miracle … I want to capture that.

I “liked” mom tog on facebook, and I also posted about this give away on my blog … you can find that here : http://jwphotographyinpa.blogspot.com

Thank you for the chance ! And Happy Mothers Day to you :)

Drew! I am so excited that this is finally out. I would love a copy of this because I am a mom that loves taking photos and am trying to learn my camera the best I can. Any information (in English) that I can get is awesome, especially when it’s written by someone with so much talent and devotion to other learning moms! I often get decent pictures of my boys but can’t usually repeat it or explain how it happened- I want to be a more educated MomTog! Thanks for the opportunity!

  4. Tamara says

I need the UNManual because I have 3 1/2 young children and that means no extra time for this mama to take photography classes…have a reference guide to learn more about my camera and the technicalities of photography would be a WONDERFUL thing! :)

I would love the unmanual because I would love to learn my camera inside and out. I have a nikon d3000 and sometimes I’m just at a loss with it. I would love to use it more and learn how to shoot manually and be able to play with settings. I’ve followed this blog for sometime and I adore it. I love that you give so many good tips on photography. It has been super helpful for me!!

  12. Congratulations on the book! I need the Unmanual because I need help with metering and lighting. Metering just down right confuses me, I have played with the different settings over and over but still no luck!I have 3 weddings to shoot this year amd would love how to use the metering settings and also see some cute poses! I am really bad about getting shadows in my pictures too! Honestly I do not have the money to spend on your lovely book of wisdom so it would be fantabulous to win!!

  14. Sarah says

I’m not gonna lie… i’m 100% broke from sinking money into my wee photography business… and basically just have no room left on my recently maxed out cards to buy the book… so to win won would just be supercalfragalisticachespee-alafantabulous. Drew, I love your work and the tips you post online alone have REALLY helped me in improving my skills… so your unmanual would truly be an awesome mothers day gift. but if i don’t win.. congrats to the winner.. i’m already uuuuuuuuuuuuuuber jealous, and of all the Momtoggers who have the extra cash to buy one!

I would love the manual because I LOVE my Rebel XTi, but don’t know how to use it properly to shoot my almost 6 month old. I feel like these precious moments are just passing by and I’m not capturing them. It looks amazing!

  18. Sarah W. says

I’m a mama to a sweet 2 year old girl whom I love taking pictures of :)

Sounds like an awesome book, Drew! Every camera manual I’ve ever looked at, I’ve always felt like the directions.. even though they say English.. aren’t actually written in English. It all is so foreign.

Well, My sweetest hubby bought me my first dslr for a mother’s day/anniversary present. So this book would be a great companion. :)

  19. Love that you do give-a-ways! I would really, REALLY, love this guide. I’ve done so much reading on how to use my manual settings…let’s face it…it isn’t the easiest reading material out there. I would love to get my hands on this book for some great insight on using my manual full time. I am a photographer who is looking for ways to help my photography skills- this sounds like the perfect answer.
Would LOVE LOVE LOVE this manual! Good luck choosing with all of these mom*togs!

I need this manual because I feel like I don’t have the “touch.” I am a rule-follower by nature and I can learn by studying. I really need to learn the basics so that I can have a strong foundation before jumping into the creative side of things!

  21. Marisa says

I’m a Mom and am just an amateur photographer. But I’d love the Unmanual to learn more about this hobby that I love, and to learn some ways to take more creative pictures of my favorite subject – my 2 year old little girl!

  22. Dana says

Drew this looks fantastic! I am a mom to a 2 yr. old & 4 yr. old and neither of them will ever look at the camera with a normal smile. Do you have any tips on THAT in your UNManual? (Maybe it’s an idea for your next manual???). :) Regardless, I still struggle sometimes with understanding all that I need to do to get GREAT images and would LOVE to win your book to help it all make sense. Happy Mother’s Day to you!

Thanks for all the great tips they are much appreciated!!!

I would love to win the Unmanual because I am STUCK in a RUT photography wise. I just can’t seem to nail my focus down using a wide aperture and my nifty fifty and don’t even get me started on custom white balance! All my pictures have a green tint when I use it! HELP!

  36. Melissa says

My son is almost 1 year old, and I’m still learning so much about photographing him! This would be an amazing addition to the information that I’ve been able to absorb online! A very generious offer of you to give it to a mom for free!! Everyone loves seeing pictures of babies/tykes, so you’re making the photographs more beautiful, one mom at a time!

  37. Martha says

I would LOVE and need this because:
    1) anything you make is RAD
    2) my kids are getting cheated by not having enough of their childhood recorded. :(
    3) my husband is getting cheated by me not using the DSLR he got me (1 year ago!) because I’m scared of manual mode.
    4) because I heart Mom*tog!

Thanks for the chance to win, Drew. And seriously, you ARE rad!
