Vacation Lenses
When I go on vacation I try to leave the pro photographer mentality at home and go the minimalistic route. I don’t want to lug around a lot of equipment (especially at 34 weeks pregnant) But, I want to have all my bases covered… just in case. Here’s what I pack in my camera bag when I go on vaca.
1) If I could only take one lens on vacation it would be the Canon 24-70 2.8. It has a good range. It’s wide, but not too wide. And I can still zoom a bit. It’s versatile, which is what I want on vacation because I don’t want to carry around a lot of equipment. And I don’t want to be changing lenses a lot. Especially when on the beach (dirty sensors are my pet peeve!).
F 2.8, 1/1600, ISO 125
F 2.8, 1/800, ISO 125
2) The lens I still shoot the most with while on vacation is my beloved Canon 50 1.2. It’s small so I can keep my 24-70 on my camera and carry the 50 1.2 in my purse. It’s good for lower light situations so I don’t need to use my flash. And it’s just my favorite lens so I could never leave it at home
F 2.0, 1/1250, ISO 125
3) I also bring my Canon 16-35 2.8. Do I need it? Not really. But, I like to have it. I use it rarely, but when I do use it I love to have it. I love a dramatic wide shot
F 2.8, 1/5000, ISO 125
F 2.8, 1/250, ISO 500
Plus, it’s great for taking rainbow pictures

This is a beautiful place for vacation, where is it ?

What body do you bring? I’m heading to Europe and can’t decide if I should bring my 7D or my rebel. I’d hate to mess up the good stuff but I’d hate not to have it when I really want to capture a winning moment either.

I always carry my 50 in my purse as well and the 24-70 stays on my body… for the most part. Looove all these pictures. They all made me smile. Glad you had a wonderful trip.

I really really really want the 24-70 2.8 for my Nikon. That is the one lens on my wish list. I love your photos Drew, they are beautiful.

Gorgeous shots! I love my 50mm too! That one basically stayed on my camera the entire time during my Jamaica trip last week!
I love these! That last shot is gorgeous!!!

I always bring my 5d. If it’s insured I would bring your 7d. Why spend all that money on a good camera body and then feel like you can’t use it?

Hi! I enjoyed reading this article. The pictures are beautiful. I am not married and look forward to photographing my kids someday.
My lenses are great, but I am needing to move up. Sometime in the future…. Do you like your 24-70 2.8 better than your 50 1.2? Which one would you buy first?
I have been following your blog for a while and really enjoying it. Keep up the great work!

Hmm.. Will a 18-55 be good? To a vaction in bulgarian?
amazing photography,
and you did bring ALL THE COMPACT POWERFULL lenses
for me 17-40 L and sigma 50 1.4 also Canon 100mm f2 snapon my 5dMk2
just compact also and still work great
Well, considering a problem of 34 weeks cannot be applied to me – I still love to carry my Canon 70-200L and Zenitar (real cheap – apps 200USD but powerful – 2.8) fisheye with me. And I do not have 28-70 – feel I do not really need one with all the rest. 50 1.2 is one of my favorites too!
Wow! I am inlove with your photos! I love the rainbow. You are amazing photographer!

I have 28-135 lens. I use it extensively. It gives me enough wide and zoom for regular shots. Would love to have the 18-200 Lens, but, this gives me a good option.
You have taken very good pictures. I really like the beach one and the rainbow. The closeup on the child’s face is fantastic.
Thanks for this blog.
